Dental microwear texture gradients in guinea pigs reveal that material properties of the diet affect chewing behaviour

چکیده
ABSTRACT Dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA) is widely used for diet inferences in extant and extinct vertebrates. Often, a reference tooth position analysed specimens, while isolated teeth are lumped together fossil datasets. It therefore important to test whether dental (DMT) specific and, if so, what causes the differences wear. Here, we present results from controlled feeding experiments with 72 guinea pigs, which received either fresh or dried natural plant diets of different phytolith content (lucerne, grass, bamboo) pelleted without mineral abrasives (frequently encountered by herbivorous mammals habitats). We tested gradients along upper cheek row. Regardless abrasive content, pigs on displayed an increase surface roughness row, indicating that posterior positions experience more wear compared anterior teeth. Guinea feedings plants low abrasiveness (fresh dry lucerne, grass) showed almost no DMT between positions, individuals (dry gradient decreasing suggest involves continuous intake comminution grinding, resulting mainly processing food already partly comminuted moistened. Pelleted require crushing, exerts higher loads, especially where bite forces highest. These chewing behaviour result opposing versus diets.

Lipid-lowering activity of Cow urine ark in guinea pigs fed with a high cholesterol diet
Objectives: Cow urine ark (CUA), known as “Amrita” as mentioned in Ayurveda, contains anti-hyperglycemic and antioxidant effects. Therefore, we designed the present study to evaluate the lipid lowering activity of CUA and its possible implication in metabolic syndrome. Materials and Methods: Thirty guinea pigs of either sex were divided into five groups: Group 1 and 2 serving as a vehicle a...
متن کاملDental microwear reveals mammal-like chewing in the neoceratopsian dinosaur Leptoceratops gracilis
Extensive oral processing of food through dental occlusion and orbital mandibular movement is often cited as a uniquely mammalian trait that contributed to their evolutionary success. Save for mandibular translation, these adaptations are not seen in extant archosaurs or lepidosaurs. In contrast, some ornithischian dinosaurs show evidence of precise dental occlusion, habitual intraoral triturat...

Background: Several therapeutic effects including anti-asthma and dyspnea have been described for Plantago lanceolata. In the present study the antitussive effect of this plant was evaluated. Methods: The antitussive effects of aerosols of two different concentrations of Soxhlet and macerated ethanolic extracts, codeine and saline were tested by counting the number of coughs produced due to aer...

Several therapeutic effects including hypnotic, antispasmodic, treatment of abdominal and chest pain and strengthening the heart have been described for the flowers of Rosa damascena. North American Indian tribes use a decoction of the roots obtained from the Rosa damascena plant as a cough remedy and to treat eye problem. Therefore, in the present study the antitussive effect of this plant in ...
